Just a reminder that we are passionate about the benefits of outdoor play at Kippen playgroup and, with our new garden available, we promote outdoor play at every opportunity. Consequently we would be grateful if you could ensure that your child has appropriate clothing for our Scottish climate and a change of clothes can be useful if not essential.
Please also note that water play in the garden is extremely popular and children frequently get wet. We consider that this is all part of the learning experiences and fun of playing in our garden. We have a stock of waterproofs which can be used in colder weather however in the milder months we prefer not to inhibit play and experiences too much. We will be very happy to change children into dry clothes or put on additional clothing if parents supply it. Please speak to staff to let us know your preferences.
Also, please note that in wet weather it may be appropriate to bring a pair of shoes for indoor play, preferably not slippers which are not safe for some large play equipment.
This is a very interesting article on loose parts and their role in children’s play and very much reflects the way we attempt to enable play and learning at playgroup.
I’ll try to summarise for those of you who don’t have time to read the whole article. Loose parts is the buzz phrase these days for all the odds and ends and assorted junk that kids just love to play with. They are not toys, they can be sticks, stones, buttons, corks, you name it and children will change it into anything they want it to be. That is the beauty, and learning, in loose parts, children imagine what they want and come up with ideas and games that adults just wouldn’t conceive of. Toys tend to “dictate” play, they suggest to children what they should be doing, a slide is for sliding, a swing for swinging, a pram for pushing a dolly in etc. Yet, how often do we see children playing with something in a completely different way to we adults anticipate? Yesterday at playgroup, for example, we watched the children fill watering cans and pans with water and pour them down the ball run – which was made to run balls down. Allowing children to think their own thoughts and make their own play stimulates much greater learning. Children make up rules, negotiate, share, communicate, help each other – all on their own. Adults don’t get involved in this play – well we try not to – children take the lead, or drive their own learning, and with them in charge they will take their learning further (and often in a completely different direction) that often we anticipate.
Playgroup returns on Friday August 26th at 9:30 am in the Village Hall. Parents wishing their child to attend must either bring a completed session 2016/2017 children’s profile form on the first day back, pass a completed form to either Dawn or Aimee or email it to firstname.lastname@example.org before hand.* Please note that this applies to both new and returning children as we cannot accept responsibility for a child without this information.
Our session 2016/2017 information booklet containing committee and session information is now also available.
Pam and Jane are looking forward to seeing everyone very soon!
*If you decide to email the form back please remember that we have no internet at the village hall so emailed returns must be made at least the day before attending – thank you!
Pam and I would like to say a big thank you for all the lovely gifts we received this week. We are so sad to see some of our children leave us but are sure they will have a great time at school and nursery after the holidays.
We look forward to seeing everyone else again at the end of August – our first session back will be on Friday August 26th.
We are planning to have a theme running throughout next session of Katie Morag so we would be pleased if you could keep this in mind over the holiday – perhaps you will be taking a ferry trip or visiting an island and you could bring us back some photos, tickets, shells or anything else you like!
Wishing you all a great summer
Jane and Pam
Two articles appeared on my news feed yesterday both relating to children’s play and accompanied by photographs. The sequential nature of the articles probably emphasised the differences but I couldn’t help but be struck by the images attached to the articles. I”m sure one is a catalogue image so I’m likely being unkind by saying […]
